Music has long been used as a means to celebrate victory (just ask a trumpet player) and that’s no exception for Classix 3. Each piece on this concert features strong connections to either military triumph or personal freedom. Wagner’s first major work, Overture to Rienzi, features a tale of heroic uprising that eventually ends in betrayal, while Brahms pays tribute to a friend’s motto “Free but Lonely,” in his Double Concerto for Violin and Cello. Finally, Shostakovich celebrates Russia’s WWII victory over Germany in Symphony No. 9.
