Golden Encore is the new performance outreach program from the Pioneer Center designed specifically for senior citizens, combining exceptional entertainment with lifelong learning opportunities. Golden Encore brings professional performing artists directly to our community’s seniors where they already live, congregate, or receive care. This includes senior centers, assisted living facilities, residential community centers, memory care facilities, public libraries, and more.
The March 2022 “Seniors Quality of Life Survey” report from HELLO Project, Truckee Meadows Tomorrow, and UNR found that 76.5% of seniors feel isolated, 77.1% feel left out, 76.5% have barriers to community participation, and the rate of suicide among seniors in Washoe County is double the national average. This study, and the knowledge of the health benefits the arts can provide, inspired the staff of the Pioneer Center to create Golden Encore to improve the quality of life for our region’s seniors.
Artists selected for the Golden Encore roster provide programs filled with music, movement, history, and a trip down memory lane. Through research study and group training, each Golden Encore program includes expert-endorsed components known to have a positive effect on the mental and physical health of seniors.
Golden Encore is made possible through an award from the Washoe County Community Reinvestment Grant Program.
